[net.general] SHRDLU

callahan@umcp-cs.UUCP (02/24/84)

I need information (code and documentation) on SHRDLU. I remember reading
about someone else requesting this a while back. The material will be used
for a paper for a class that is reading Hofstadter's book GODEL, ESCHER,
BACH. In this book, there is a conversation with Eta Oin and Dr. Earrwig.
The class is interested in knowing more about SHRDLU's detail code, design,
etc.

Thanks in advance, Jack Callahan (callahan@umcp-cs)

SHRDLU is a program for understanding natural language written by
Terry Winograd (my brother) for his Ph.D. dissertation at MIT in 1970.
It is described in his book "Understanding Natural Language" published
by Academic Press in 1972.

There is a problem with getting the source code: after all these years,
Terry no longer has a copy of it. You might try contacting:

   1. the AI lab at MIT.
   2. Dave McDonald at the Computer Science department at the University
of Massachusetts in Amherst (he used to send out tapes from MIT AI).

Dr. Tony Earrwig is an anagram for Terry Winograd.
