"in the daytime, i'm mr. natural, just as healthy as i can be, but at night i'm a junk-food junkie. good lord have pity on me!" -- popular song from the late 70's (does anyone know who wrote it?) and now, thank to the miracles of modern market research, we can judge just how accurate those words are... i beg forgiveness if this has already been posted in which case i promise to go without twinkies for a whole week; here are some excerpts from a wall street journal story, about mid-january (sorry, i don't have the exact date): "this is the first [study] i know of that's examining attitudes and behavior to see if people actually practice what they preach"... sure enough, the groups didn't stick to their stated preferences, the study found. while the naturalists ate far less sugar than most of their counterparts, they ate chocolate chips more frequently. they liberally ate pretzels, jell-o, macaroni and cheese and homemade cake... the sophisticates, on the other hand, were above-average eaters of doughnuts and pre-packaged cakes, including sara lee frozen cakes and hostess twinkies... as expected, each more surprisingly, group frequently eats: each group frequently eats: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- fresh fruit, rice, natural cereal french toast with syrup, bran bread, wheat germ, chocolate chips, homemade yogurt, granola bars NATURALISTS cake, pretzels, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- wine, mixed drinks, beer, prepackaged cake, cream butter, rye/pumpernickel cheese, olives (probably in bread, bagels SOPHISTICATES drinks), doughnuts, frozen dinners ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- skim milk, diet margarine, coffee, zucchini, squash salads, fresh fruit, sugar substitutes DIETERS -- posted without interpretation by dash (...decvax!microsof!fluke!dash or fluke!dash@uw-vlsi)
