[comp.sys.ibm.pc] UNIX on a clone?

dlu@tektools.UUCP (Doug Urner) (11/16/86)

I am looking for a machine to run UNIX or something quite like it on.
I'd like to spend less than $5000 (hopefully a whole lot less) and
support two users. So far this has lead me to look for an AT clone
(or compatible). Can anyone make suggestions as to good machines
and/or dealers and reasonable configurations? Are there "single user"
versions of UNIX that will run on an XT or plain PC? Are there better
low end machines for UNIX?

You should take a look at the ATT 6300+ running SimulTask. This gives
you Unix VR2 with very good MSDOS/AT in a subjob. Lemme know if
you find a good dealer.

Another cost effective choice is the ATT 3B1, the newest and now decent
version of the unix pc 7300. It also has fair msdos emulation.

If you don't need msdos, there are GREAT m68000 machines available for
under $5000, such as MegaMax, Cyb, an others. See Unix REview.

For info on ATT stuff, see comp.sys.att.
