[comp.sys.ibm.pc] tape-backup systems

phcalamai@water.UUCP (Paul H. Calamai) (01/04/87)

I'm looking for advice before purchasing a tape-backup unit
for my IBM-PC. Reliability and speed are my primary concerns
(cost isn't). I'm not sure if my power supply will support
an internal tape drive so I may have to restrict myself to
an external drive with it's own power supply. So far I'm
favoring the Tallgrass TG-1040e or 1020e but they aren't
the fastest by any means ( r/w speed = 75 in./sec. , data
transfer rate = 750kb/sec.). Please email me your comments
and recommendations if you have any. I'd be interested in
the options, features, drawbacks, integrity, price, etc if
you can supply them. I'd also be interested in hearing about
any magazine reviews (I've seen the one in BYTE, Oct. 1986).
Thanks
Paul Calamai

We have a Microsystems MT25 that we use for tape backups. I say "we"
because it is an external unit that connects to a PC or XT via the
floppy-disk connector sticking out the back of the machine. It takes
the DC600A cartridges and can store up to 24 Mbytes/cart. The
supplied software is fully menu driven and very easy to use (read: I
let my managers us it unattended). We paid about $1k - $1.3k for it
several (2? 3?) years ago. We are very happy with the unit. Of
course, I can order the cartridges out of stock so I'm not seriously
impacted by their price (appx. $25 each, I think).

We've also purchased two interface cards to stick in AT's. I haven't
had much experience with these, however, and so I can't testify to
their efficacy.
