[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Recovering files with bad spots

lane@dalcs.UUCP (John Wright/Dr. Pat Lane) (01/05/87)

I recently had to recover a file which had developed a CRC error on one
sector. I tried DOS copy, typeing I for the "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"
as well as various things with Norton's Utilities, etc. I finally
succeeded by copying the whole disk with Locksmith's Fast backup
utility. The file on the copy-disk was readable and complete except
for some garbage where the munged sector had been.

Is there an easier way to do this (there should be!). Perhaps, a
software product? Is there anything which duplicates Locksmith's
"fast backup". If nothing else, it's alot faster than MSDOS's
diskcopy. It would be nice to have it a simple utility.

Thanks for any responses.

I believe The Mace Utilities includes a utility that will recover files
from damaged areas of the disk (and does a rather good job of it too).
