[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Hercules models?

dalegass@dalcs.UUCP (01/19/87)

I have a Hercules card that works exactly like an IBM-PC CGA card.
I see a lot about different hercules cards and their capabilities, and
am somewhat confused as to the different models. I think my card
has better graphics abilities than the CGA, but I don't know how to access
them (I never got a manual with the card.)

If anybody could tell me what the different hercules models are, and
what they can do, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

There are 3 models of Hercules boards:

The Hercules graphics board is an IBM monochrome replacement. Its normal
mode of operation is identical to its IBM counterpart. It has an additional
mode of operation allowing for 720x348 monochrome graphics. Unfortunately,
in this mode, character output is a pain, and without other software (ie.
SIMCGA) programs written for the CGA will not run on it (different resolution
and memory mapping).

The Hercules CGA (what I presume you have) is a direct replacement for the
IBM CGA. It fits in a short slot and contains a parallel printer adapter
(which the IBM CGA does not). I don't believe that it has any additional
operating modes.

The newest Hercules board seems to be a Hercules graphics board that will
also allow for easy character output, loadable character sets, and direct
communication with aliens from Mars (well, maybe not, but the advertising
might lead you to believe it does). I don't know much more about it.

Since the Hercules board has become a "standard," there are several "clones"
on the market. It is hard to say what they do and do not do.
