We have a couple of different LANs here that were set up for communication
between computers running UN*X with ARPA services. We are in the process of
adding a lot of Vectras (AT Compatible) to the LAN. We originally tried a
software package called FUSION that is quite nice, but are now testing FTP's
PC/TCP software because of the MAIL programs included (a primary need here).
The one thing that FUSION has over the FTP package is a general purpose
SERVER, which allows one to put the Vectra into a "listen" mode on the LAN.
(As DOS is only single-tasking, then a user can either talk or listen, but not
both at the same time like the UN*X machines.) Both packages have telnet and
ftp, but the FTP package has a number of other Berkley programs (finger, tftp,
whois, rlogin, rexec, etc.). While using the FTP package, one can immediately
send mail out over LAN, but one must run an SMTP server to receive mail (and
of course do nothing else on the computer while its waiting to receive mail).
We use 3Com 3c501 LAN cards in the Vectras.
