A real quickie for someone who knows this off the top of
their head:
1) Is the number of sectors/track for a hard disk
a constant under DOS across all drives (or is it
oblivious to such details)?
2) If number of sectors/track is different for different
drive types, who maintains this information (the
controller?) and how does DOS get access to this number?
3) If DOS expects a constant number of sectors/track, how
do the RLL controllers (like Adaptec's) which increase
storage by increasing the bit density per track get these
extra bits back to DOS?
And to respondents: thanks for saving me from having to look this
up to satisfy my curiosity.
