[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Releasing RAM-DISK to free system memory

FIB@PSUVM.BITNET (01/19/87)

Does anyone know how to release a RAM-Disk to give me more system memory?
In particular, I'm using an ATT 6300 with the supplied RAM-Disk software.
I define the RAM-Disk in my CONFIG.SYS file, but later find it a bother
to re-boot the system with a non-RAM-Disk CONFIG.SYS.

Is there any way to do this ?

There is a nifty ram-disk program available from simtel20.arpa which allows
you to change the size of the ram-disk dynamically without rebooting. There
are limits on the sizes allowed (I think the minimum size is 32K). Sure is nice
to be able to say adjram +64 to increase the size of the ramdisk
when you have to put a big file on it (and adjram -64 when you're done).

I think the file is PD:<MSDOS.DISK-UTIL>ADJRAM.ARC.

I don't know that it will work on the ATT 6300 though...

Enclosed is something you would probably like. I didn't write it and it
was written with a fairly unpopular compiler and assembler so I use it
as a black box.

I have a nifty RAM-Disk that was posted to the net a while back. It
comes with two pieces of code, a device driver, and a user-level
program. The user program allows the disk to be created (to any size)
and removed without rebooting the system.

As long as I am not flooded with requests, I will send it to anyone
interested. Contact me for more information.

I don't know if that can be done in general -- but here's a program (which I
got off this newsgroup; history repeats...) that makes a removeable RAMdisk.
I've used it enough to know that it works, at least in normal memory. The
ARC contains a device driver, a .COM file, documentation, and some trivial
.BAT files.

I have a ramdisk called, appropriately, RAMDISK that I have been
using on the 6300 / msdos 3.1 for several months. I have never
enountered any problems. The nice feature is that you specify the
size you wat from 1 to about 500K. It is two pieces, a part called
RAMDRV.SYS which you mention in your CONFIG.SYS file that is always
there, but not much of a penalty at only 512 bytes. The handler is
RAMDISK.COM which accepts a numeric argument or the word "off" to
disable the ram drive. The arc'ed files and docs are about 4K in
size, so mail or call me if you want `em. One handy use of RAMDISK
is to eat up memory for some of those older programs around that
wrap around to zero at 512K.

Best wishes,
Bill

PS: I got the program mentioned above from a posting in
net.sources early in 1986.

A mild flame.....

Peter Fales and Bill Mayhew have graciously consented to *E-MAIL* requests
to anyone who wants this program. I contacted Peter, and believe me, he is
true to his word (thank you, Peter!). The program has since been posted
directly to the net for the second time in as many days.

I realize that there is no true mechanism for distributing binaries (most
people use net.sources, but somehow that doesn't seem right, either), and
it's nice to see that people are so eager to help out their fellow netters,
but if someone is willing to send responses directly to interested indivi-
duals, then I see no reason to clutter the net (and run up a lot of peoples'
phone bills!) with repeated postings of the same program. That's one man's
opinion, anyway.

Jim Greenlee comments that two people offered to e-mail copies of RAMDISK to
requestors, and wishes that others wouldn't clutter up the net with postings.
I am one of those posters, and I am somewhat sympathetic to his views.
However, from his point of view the postings came AFTER the offers for e-mail.
Jim, do you realize that I posted the code some days BEFORE I saw that any
others had posted? And that the e-mail offers arrived at this site more than
a week after I posted?

In other words, this is not a real-time medium. There is a sometimes large,
and quite variable, delay in propagation and response times. I try to allow
for this, and posted anyway in this case because the total package was fairly
small and I decided "what the heck..." Perhaps that was a mistake (not my
first, if so). But the irregular response is a general problem. Many people
talk about code they've posted to comp.sources. We haven't received anything
for comp.sources since it was created. I often read responses to articles I
haven't yet seen, and may never see. Occasionally a burst of articles arrives,
pertinent to a topic that seemed to have (finally) died weeks ago.

This isn't trying to be a flame, or a defense of my posting. Just a plea:
when someone's article seems incredibly stupid to you, realize that it may be
a reaction to a much different sequence (and/or subset) of previous articles
than what you've seen. And that, on that person's timeline, what (s)he said
may have been the best possible answer. And what you say may seem equally
dense, given that you've seen or not seen other articles than those received by
that site on the far side of the country.

also there should be a public domain program available
on your local bbs. I dont know what it is called, but have seen it.
it will allow you to remove memory resident programs.
if there is enough interest i will attempt to find the program
on some of our local bbs's. I havent been able to get onto
the biggest one in quite awhile. apparently it is rather busy 8-)
