[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Help, my new Seagate 238, WD RLL controller, and my old IBM PC-1 don't work together

clayee@miro.Berkeley.EDU.UUCP (02/04/87)

Hello,
   I bought a Seagate ST-238 hard disk and a Western Digital WD-1002 27X
RLL controller this past weekend but have not had any luck getting them
to work with my OLD IBM PC-1 (with 64K motherboard). My attempts
to do a low level format according to my one page of documentation
have gotten me to the point of "Press 'y' to format drive C" (or something
similar. When I press 'y' I immediately get the message
"Error---completion code 01". My PC does not
seem to acknowledge the hard disks' existance because I can't take a
directory of drive C. I am using DOS 2.0 and my other equipment
includes one disk drive, an IBM color graphics card and a multifunction
card. The following are some questions that I have have tried to
puzzle out.

Do I need to set some DIP switch on the motherboard? I have tried
the 1 and the 3 floppy settings.
What are the symptoms of an inadequate power supply? The Segate
sounds like its spinning and I can hear the heads moving on power up.
Also, the power supply is only very slightly warmer than before. I
have also tried taking out the multifunction card to conserve some power.
Do I need new ROMs? My understanding is that the hard disk should
work without them, but I couldn't boot directly from the HD. How much
would a ROM upgrade cost?
Finally do I need to change some jumpers on the controller. The
One page "manual" I received with the controller mentions a need to
configure the drive to be "drive 0" by setting switches on the drive.
I couldn't see any switches.

If you have ANY suggestions, please send me a note. Many thanks in
advance.

Clayton Yee
