[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Does an "atari PC" exist?

angel@bentley.UUCP (02/27/87)

I recently heard that Atari has a PC clone. It allegedly doesnt
have add in slots, but comes will fully memory (640K), a PGA
equivalent, floppy and hard disk controllers, serial and
parallel ports. And all for less than $500.

Has anybody out there heard of such a beast?

Yes. Heard-of and seen....
Looks like a nice machine. I'll probably buy one in a few months...

BTW, it does have 1 expansion slot (so I was told) and Atari has plans
to sell and expansion box with additional slots and maybe room and power
supply for a hard drive that will plug into the existing slot. The $500
price is for the machine without monitor... If you want their multi-mode
mono monitor (auto detects color signals and synthisyzes gray-scale
substitutions to display the color modes) the machine+monitor is ~= $700.

I figure $700 is more than reasonable for a 640k,
mono/graphics + CGA + EGA machine with both
serial and printer ports built in...

Yes, indeed, Atari does have a PC clone, and it sounds quite nice from what
I hear. It has a switchable (4.77/8 MHz) 8086 board with 8087 socket and
comes with 512K (expandable to 640K on board) and one 5.25" floppy drive.
A second external drive (5.25" or 3.5") can be added. There is also a serial,
a parallel, a video, a mouse, and a ST-type disk port along the rear, but
there are no expansion slots (no more room!) The video modes supported
are the Hercules mono, CGA, and optional EGA. I heard that there is
a special monochrome monitor that can display all modes using gray-scales.

Cost ranges from $500 (no EGA) to $700 (w/EGA & mono monitor).
