[comp.sys.ibm.pc] looking for DES cards for the PC

karn@faline.UUCP (03/31/87)

I'm looking for a DES card for the PC. A quick scan through the
back pages of BYTE revealed one, but it uses a slow Intel processor
(8031) to run the algorithm. Why bother? You're better off just
doing it in software on in the host processor. Does anybody know of
a board with a *fast* chip like the AMD 9518/Z8068?

Theres a company in Sacremento called Jones-Futurex who makes
this type of card. They have a variety, with various flavors of
comms. chips on the cards. The constant is a very secure (steel
encased, self destruct on tampering) encryption unit using the
AMD chipset and running NBS standard algorithms. The person to
talk to was Don Thompson who was director of engineering two years
ago. He and I did not agree so don't use my name!

Except for some real-time applications, I found lots public-domain
SOFTWARE fit my need for data encryption.
