Hello fellow PC users, I am considering the purchase of either PC/VI or the MKS Toolkit and would like to get some idea as to which package is better, and what tradeoffs must made in choosing one over the other. In particular, I would like to know just how complete the implimentation of VI is in each. Also, in the case of the MKS Toolkit, does it contain lex, make, and lint, and how would you rate the Korn shell that comes with it? So far, the lowest prices I have found were: $99.00 (both of them) as advertised by the "programmer's connection" in COMPUTER LANGUAGE, Vol. 4, Num. 5, May 1987. Shipping is free. Has anyone seen a better deal? Dan Gold Lockheed Missiles & Space Company, Inc. It is complete, fast, and well documented. If you put the .EXE file in a ramdisk, the resonpse is superb. Louis Schmittroth ...{ihnp4 | ubc-vision}!alberta!auvax!louis Athabasca University

> I am considering the purchase of either PC/VI or the MKS Toolkit and > would like to get some idea as to which package is better, ... > I've responded to these inquiries before, so I'll keep this short: I have the MKS Toolkit and I wouldn't trade it back in (and use command.com and 'friends') again on a bet! It is not only a great collection of programs (vi, sed, awk, cpio, dd, mv, cp, find, ls with all options, fgrep & egrep, etc, etc) but it includes aliasing and functions like Korn Shell AND has some of the best documentation I've ever seen. I use the MKS documentation to figure out UNIX commands of the same name (especially sed and awk!) With PC/VI at somewhere around $100 and MKS Toolkit and around $150 you're wasting your money to get only vi! My only complaint is that there appears to be no "lpr" or equivalent command to print files to the line printer; and my e-mail inquiries regarding same are either lost or ignored. I have been using PC/VI for six months and have no complaints except that the load time is really too long, but so is the MSC compiler and I consider it to also be an excellent tool. I use vi on UNIX and on DOS without having to think about which environment I am in. I have a shell that simulates the ksh keyboard interface (it does not support if, while, case, etc) but does support various editor modes and the `command` and is aware of COMMAND.COM. I find it compatible for my needs. Since I wrote it, I guess that if I don't find it right for me, I can change it. If anyone wants info on lsh (leder's shell) send me a reply and I will send you a doc. Bob Leder
