Recently, I posted a query to ba.wanted (SF Bay Area) asking if anyone had info on 'vi' for MSDOS. One response said MANX 'Z' is good, but he thought it only came with their 'C' compiler. Does anyone know if MANX 'Z' (aka vi) can be purchased separately? Or, if you don't know, how about a phone number for MANX? -- Fred Elliott (408) 749-5680 UUCP: {ucbvax,decwrl,ihnp4,allegra}!amdcad!fredel ARPA: amdcad!fredel@decwrl.ARPA

The MKS Toolkit or Custom Software Systems vi for pc's are much better. The cost for the Z editor was $75.00 a couple of years ago. You should be able to the the MKS Toolkit for around $100 (or less), which also includes a few of UNIX(tm) utilities for MS/PC DOS. Loran N. Yourk ihnp4!ihlpf!lyourk

I've used Z some, and it seems like a limited subset of vi. PC/VI might be better, although I've never looked at it. Eisuke Muroga ARPA emuroga@b.cs.uiuc.edu CSNET emuroga@uiuc.csnet USENET uiucdcsb!emuroga

Yes, indeed! The Manx "vi" clone is not "ex"-based, and it can't handle very large files (my copy, running on an AT clone, truncates after about 46K). It has some annoying behaviors, such as starting a new line with the same indent as the previous line, and of course only a small subset of the "ex" commands is available. The "vi" that comes with MKS looks and feels just like the real thing, as far as I can tell; the Toolkit is worth its price for the editor alone.
