[net.general] Cordless phones. Help requested.

I looked through the list of active news groups before posting this here,
and I couldn't find anything else that seemed appropriate. If this is the
wrong choice, I'm sure that someone will let me know.

I have just become the proud owner of a Nomad 450 Cordless Telephone from
AT&T. I hooked it up last night to give it a try, and within an hour I
discovered that someone nearby has a unit on the same channel. Now, the
fact that I'm living in the heart of AT&T country, Berkeley Heights, N.J.,
probably increased the odds against me, but I was still suprised that in
an area where there are only 10 homes within the conceivable range of the
unit I would have someone else on the same channel. After a little research,
I discovered that there are only ten channels assigned to the Nomad 450.
This will obviously increase the odds againt me when I move back home to
California next month where the houses are much closer together. I have
calculated that I might have as many as fifty homes within range there.

My questions then are these. Can any of you tell me if there might be
other cordless phones using the same frequencies as the Nomad 450? I hope
not, but I don't know. More important, the owner's manual says to exchange
the unit for one on another channel if you encounter interference. I would
rather be able to change the channel myself. Can this be done? Can any of
you tell me how? I am reasonably adept with tools, and I can identify a DIP
switch and a variable resistor/potentiometer, but I'm not too hot on reading
circuit diagrams. They don't provide one anyway! I'll be grateful for any
suggestions.

                                      Thanks,
                                        Pete Criqui
