[comp.sys.ibm.pc] weird disk problem

dyer@spdcc.UUCP (05/30/87)

I moved two hard disks from an AT clone to a genuine AT -- problem is
that after the POST, the drive light goes on for about 2-3 minutes,
it times out with a
1790 - Drive error 0
Hit F1 to continue
and then hitting F1 without a floppy in the drive accesses the boot code
on drive 0 and XENIX comes up without any problems whatsoever. If I put
a DOS or diagnostics disk into the floppy, it either hangs (never returns
after reading a few sectors) or gives a
PARITY CHECK 1
00000 (S)

This is something I can't understand; the POST passes its memory tests
(all the way up to 6mb), and the drives have been moved intact, cables
and all. I even tried both the clone's and the IBM's disk controller--
no difference. Both drives have the correct hardware types (embellished
by the Golden Bow DUB-14 ROMs with their additional drive tables.)
Both machines were running impeccably before being touched. XENIX
seems to be doing fine, so it's more of an annoyance than a real problem,
but I'd like to get to the bottom of it.
