Emergency!! I represent a high-quality team entered in the Bellingham (Washington) Ski-to-Sea Race on May 27, 1984. This is a big-name, multi-event race incorporating legs in Nordic and Alpine skiing, running, biking, canoeing, and sailing. But, with only days remaining, we have lost our runner to emergency work commitments. We have good reason to expect excellent results in this race. Each of our event-legs is quite strong and experienced. All have participated in this race at least twice before. We have sponsorship money. We have all reservations, transportation (from Seattle area), and connections (during race) arranged. But we don't have a runner. If you are interested, first consider that the running involves 8-1/4 miles of pavement, 7 miles of which is a continuous downhill mountain road. If you are still interested, here are some guidelines: 1. Excellent intermediate distance speed is necessary. Top competitors in this race run 31 minute (or less) 10K's. With the depth of our team, a 31-32 minute 10K runner would also be appropriate. 2. Prolonged downhill running expertise and experience are very important. On the 7-mile downhill section, sustained speeds of 4:45/mile are competitive. Sure don't want much, do I? Well, creeping desperation warrants this invasion of net.general. Any takers?
