[comp.sys.ibm.pc] DOS disk size barrier

rsb@rayssde.RAY.COM (Raymond S. Burns) (06/25/87)

I am looking for software to break the 32 Meg DOS disk size barrier. At least
one commercial package exists (Speedstor by Storage Dimensions, Los Gatos, CA).
Does anyone know of a public domain version or how to patch DOS to extend the
barrier?

This raises an interesting question: the DOS 3.3 Tech Ref contains
information about a new OS type byte in the hard disk partition table.
This byte (a 5, I think) indicates something about the partition being
continued elsewhere, thus allowing drives to be merged together into one
large logical drive.

Has anyone used 3.3 yet, and tried to use this feature?

It doesn't break the barrier, but it now lets you get around it. The product?
PC-DOS 3.30 has finally taken into account hard drives larger than 32Mb. This
has come about because IBM is now shipping larger drives. Let's not get into
the political reasons.

Anyway, if you get get PC-DOS 3.30, you can partition your hard drive into
one physical drives and multiple logical drives. Each logical drive can
be 32Mb as well. The logical drives are mapped into the system after the
physical drives.
