[comp.sys.ibm.pc] The old game of hangman

nathan@eddie.MIT.EDU (Nathan Glasser) (06/27/87)

I cannot un-arc all of the files from the uuencoded wordwiz.arc
sent to comp.binaries.ibm.pc.

Either the uuencoded binaries of wordwiz.arc were not sent over
the net properly, or, as Arc (both the unix version and the
pc version) claims, you may be using a later and incompatible version
of Arc. I was using version 5.2, which was distributed on Usenet
within the last month or so.

It lets me get wordwiz.com out, but complains for (I believe)
wordwiz.dat.

If others are having this problem, maybe the author should
uuencode it and send it again.

This file is in "squashed" format. I used pkxarc (which was also
distributed on Usenet not so long ago, so it shouldn't be so hard to find)
and it unarced without a hitch.

I received several responses to my original complaint about
arc being unable to work the wordwiz.arc posted to comp.binaries.ibm.pc.

The answer is that I am supposed to use pkxarc to get the files from it.

Honestly, though, how is one supposed to know to use pkxarc instead
of arc? The filename extensions are the same (.arc), and there is
no mention of which program he used in the message.

According to PKARC, wordwiz.dat has been "squashed". The moderator
of comp.binaries.ibm.pc has stated that uuencode and pkarc are the
programs to be used for packing files and has posted both uuencode/decode
and pkarc (they are still there today) to the group.

This note is strictly an informative message; I'm not expressing any
personal views. I did not post hangman nor do I have anything to do with
comp.binaries.ibm.pc. DO NOT SEND ME ANY FLAMES!

If you had read the Administrivia that was posted (it's not there today
but it was there last week) then you would have known. The moderator
said that binary uploads are to be uuencode pkarc files. If you
started subscribing to comp.binaries.ibm.pc before the Administrivia
message was deleted then you deserve any headaches you've recieved.
However, I agree that it would be helpful 1)if the Administrivia message
was not deleted and 2)if people mention that they've used pkarc v?.?
to pack the files they've uploaded.

The standard arc'er for comp.binaries.ibm.pc is PKARC 3.5, which I posted a
few weeks ago. If you need a copy, send mail to me (see my .signature for
interesting paths).

Since they should all be PKARC 3.5 files, you should use PKXARC 3.5 to extract
them.  There is a new Info message out, immediately followed by PKARC/PKXARC;
I repost both monthly, so people should always be able to get their hands on
PKXARC.
