...rc as far back as I can remember stod for "run com" as in a file with shell commands to be run. The only "official" rc file those days was /etc/rc, the going-multi-user runcom file. Then came the ".profile," which was a run com for each user to be run as he logged in. Now I guess it means lots of different things. The .mailrc is the list of commands for mail to execute when it starts up while .cshrc is the same for the C shell. Pace Willisson here thinks he heard someone say this all started in the CTSS days. I never liked the "runcom" word, but can't think of anything that better describes its function (perhaps "startup?", but some runcoms were for doing non start-up tasks). Olympics tickets? Want ads? Ride offerings? Path querys? net.general is CHOKING! I can't remember the last time I saw a posting in net.general that didn't really belong elsewhere. Are there suddenly bunches of new users who don't know better? PLEASE, people, study up on netiquette. Despite my earlier complaint about those who send unnecessarily nasty notes to perpetrators (which netted me some interesting hate mail), I certainly realize how bad the problem has become. This group travels throughout the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia. It is (or was) the most widely read group of them all because it is meant for general interest items. Selling Olympics tickets is not general interest. Want ads are not general interest. There's a place for such notices, and net.general ain't it. There is net.wanted, net.travel, net.net-people, to name a few. There is net.flame for notes such as this, but I am trying to reach maximal offenders with minimal effort. Please, THINK before you post! net.news.group publishes a semimonthly list of active newsgroups and their topics -- study up. ---------- Nathan Meyers hp-pcd!nathanm
