I am posting this for a friend, please respond via mail to HIM, TNX ... johnd/KA2QHD ---------------------------------------------------- I am looking for any information on the PHYSICAL TRACK formats of IBM floppy disks, 5.25 " and 3.5 " I define Physical Format to the the BIT sequences between sectors including sector/track ID, CRC's and flags. This is the format that the disk controller puts on the disk, NOT the way PC/MS-DOS organizes the file system on the disk. PLEASE RESPOND TO ME VIA MAIL SINCE I DO NOT HAVE DIRECT ACCESS TO THE NET. I've been thrown in the deep end a bit: I need to write a driver in C that
will access MS-DOS V3.0 (360K) disks: reading, writing, subdirectories, the
whole enchilada. I would be most grateful if someone could email me any
information on how they work, (i.e. where the FAT's live, what is the
structure of directories, what does a directory entry look like, how
are subdirectories handled etc. etc. etc. etc. Work on the assumption
that I know what tracks, sectors, heads, etc. are, but have absolutely
NO knowledge of what stuff MS-DOS itself is writing on the disk in the
way of file structure. (I just know about FAT's because I heard someone
mention them, I'm not sure what they are, but they seem to be important.
Thanks in advance for your help,

You MUST go get a copy of Ray Duncan's 'Advanced MS-DOS.' It is reasonably priced, clear, complete, accurate, and about 30 times too big to post here.

Your best source (ok, one of the better) is to go to your local IBM PC
dealer and purchase a copy of the PC-DOS 3.30 Technical Reference Manual.
It contains what you need to know for all the MS-DOS versions.
