[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Multitech 224EH and 224EC differences.

IKS@PSUVM.BITNET (Indra K. Singhal) (07/22/87)

Disclaimer:

What follows is strictly MY understanding of the differences. I do not
claim for them to be 100% correct.

(It is tough to formulate/think straight after having written a disclaimer)

1) The EC uses a different kind of ROM than the EH. All development for
advances in MNP are being done for the EH. After the EH has MNP 5 all done and
released, they will begin work on it for the internal 224EC.

2) The EC does not have non-volatile memory which saves the configuration.
A new revision of the EC (not upgradeable) is scheduled to be released soon.
The EH does have RAM and a lithium battery that saves that information.

3) The EH allows you to communicate PC<->Modem at 9600 baud while the modem
does it on the phoneline at lower speeds. This feature allows you to really
exploit MNP achieving upto 200% throughput with MNP 5. Not so with the 224EC.

4) Ofcourse, the EC has not status lights.

5) Verbally said, the EC does not allow leased line operation... I dont know
about that, I think I saw soemthing in the doc that said EC did allow it. EH
does allow leased line operation.

6) EC only allows async communication. the external EH allows sync and async
connections.

These are the differences that I can think off-hand while I write this... they
were enough to get me to spring for the extra money for the EH. I get mine
today !!
