There is a program named XRAY on most better public BBS which would be the cat's meow for this. I downloaded it, amused myself with its windows, and never used it. (I do not do windows or hacking :-) It literally provides a real-time "window" into what is happening and why. You do have to understand what all those "hex coded" are doing though.
