[comp.sys.ibm.pc] need help with PROCOMM

anthony@utstat.UUCP (08/09/87)

I would be very grateful if someone can help me with the following
problem that is making me age prematurely:

I am trying to use a Smarteam modem with PROCOMM and when I try to
dial (using ALT-D, option m (manual), atdt ...-....), I hear the normal
telephone tone (same as when you pick up the phone to dial) along with the
actual dialing superimposed on it. After a few seconds, a taped message from
the operator states that the call did not go through and that I should try
again.

If I use a modem which has a jack for the telephone line as well
as for the telephone, then the only way I can establish connection is by
ALT-D and atd followed by the manual dialing of the number using the telephone -
while the phone rings, I press RETURN on my keyboard and once I hear the
carrier from the number I dialed manually, I put the receiver down and I
am able to hear the carrier through the micro's speaker and able to connect
fine.

I tried playing around with XTALK and the software ALWAYS thinks that
I am on line (which happens once I turn the modem on). However, as I am
particularly interested in sticking with PROCOMM, suggestions for PROCOMM
would be preferred.

         I would appreciate suggestions/responses directly through e-mail.

Many thanks in advance!!

One of the values that gets passed to the modem in the startup string
tells the modem how long each tone should be. If the tone is to short
the phone lines may not be able to tell what numbers you were calling.

I don't remember what the code is, but it should be in you modem manual,
and it may be in the procomm documentaion as well.

Good luck!

Phil
