When I came upon Procomm a short time ago, I thought that it would be close to ideal for a project I am involved with involving telecommunications. We want to be able to download files, upload files and allow for remote control of a PC. All of these features would have to be put into a script for non-skilled users. Procomm claims all of these features, and it is shareware, hence it is cheap, but.... I set up two plain vanilla IBM PC AT's w/ IBM's 1200 baud internal modem and put one into host mode. I called it from the other AT. I was able to upload and download with no problem. Then I tried to get a directory by choosing the Files option. The directory was displayed on my CRT but then everything froze up. I later tried the same thing with the Shell command which puts you inside the remote computer and I got a DOS prompt and again, everything froze. I switched the machines so that the second one was now calling the first one. Same thing. I called some folks in the field. One said that they'd had the same problem using a Tandy 3000. The other person said that he'd had no problems at all. After we went through my modem, terminal, and other settings, he said that he thought the problem was hardware--specifically a modem problem, since there were no apparent incorrect settings and there were no programs running in the background that would blow things up either (I got rid of all memory- resident programs; I disabled the autoexec.bat file that called them). He used PC AT's with different modems and it all worked fine. D I called DataStorm first. They said that I couldn't get any support since I wasn't a registered user--of course, until I find out whether the bug can be fixed, I won't be a registered user so they were of little help. Their public bbs is always busy and only registered users get to call the private bboard. (They don't do tech support by phone). IBM of course was of little help when I tried to find out about the modem. THey knew nothing about the modem or procomm or telecommunications in general. Not too surprising, yet very frustrating. So I call on the mighty net-mind for guidance, since time is of essence. I am running Procomm 2.4.2, which is the latest version (3.0 is an unsupported beta version) on the two IBM AT's mentioned above, each one with an IBM internal 1200 baud modem. Can this thing be fixed ? Without buying new modems? IF not, what other programs are there that will allow for file transfer and remote-access with my hardware--will carbon copy plus work, for example, and is it any good? While I will eagerly be waiting for E-mail, I think that the best way to get me is to call me at work, since my net access lately has been rather intermittent due to factors largely out of my control. My number, for those of you who can call out, is (718) 935-3432 or 3437. I'm in from 10-6, NY time. If I am out, please leave a message and I'll get right back to you. Thank you all in advance. __ DC (David Cohen) E-MAIL: cohen_3@husc4.harvard.edu or cohen@pluto.UUCP AT&T : (718) 935-3432 or 3437 4
