[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Uninstalling fansi; PC clock

lance@ubvax.UUCP (08/20/87)

Two questions:

1) Is anyone aware of a way to un-install fconsole.dev (fansi) short of
rebooting? Although I love the thing there are some programs which
will not run (well-documented by Hersey, btw).

2) Has anyone found a way to keep an idle but powered-on PC's clock from
losing days when idle time is longer than 2 consecutive midnights?
As I understood it, BIOS maintains only the Time-Of-Day, and relies
upon "higher functions" to roll the date when necessary. BIOS keeps a
bit that it will return to callers to indicate that the TOD has
overflowed. But if the bit is not interpreted correctly by the next
caller to the BIOS TOD routine, the roll-over is lost. So, if the PC
is left on but idle for 2 or more roll-overs, the number of roll-overs
   is lost.

It appears that BDOS is a knowlegable data corrector. If some software
is running which calls BDOS to get to the BIOS TOD, the date will roll
correctly. The file system, however, appears to neither call BDOS nor
correct the date itself. This problem has been around as long as the PC.

I'm sure someone will correct me if the above is wrong, but I'm
wondering just the same if anyone has come up with a good solution.

Sorry if either of these has been covered before. I can't regularly read
the news. Thanks.
