[comp.sys.ibm.pc] programed io to disk controller

Does anybody know if it is possible to read data from the
hard disk controller using programmed IO rather than using
	the dma controller?

Are you talking about an AT or an XT (the AT uses programmed I/O already).
I think the XT controller can be accessed using programmed I/O. The controller
can be set up to use DMA channel 3 or IRQ5. You might have to poll some
register on the controller to use it in PIO mode. That's all I know.
