There semms to be some Compaq people out there. I have a Deskpro (original) and changed the hard disk to a Vertex V170. I run it with an Omti 5527 RLL controller which gets 90M bytes very reliably. The access time is 19 ms for a 32M partition, 1:1 interleave, and the xfer rate is 7.5 Mbits. I used to run Compaq MS-DOS 3.2 but had to change to PC-DOS 3.2 because Compaq Dos won't support a disk which does not have 17 sectors per cylinder. The RLL puts 26 sectors on a cylinder. PC Dos doesn't seem to care and works fine. Why does Compaq have to keep trying to prevent people from doing thier own add-ons! DOS works just fine without Compaq screwing it up! My question is whether Compaq/MS-Dos 3.3 will support other than "standard" hard disks. Apparently enhdisk.sys will have to be rewritten. Using PC-Dos is okay but I have to use the Irwin Tape software (better) and copy the mode file from Compaq Dos. This disk change allows me to run Sys V.2 on the DSI-32 coprocessor without gaging so badly on disk transfers, but SCSI without DOS would be a lot better.
