I am about to purchase an AT clone and I have some questions before I buy. I want to get a 10 Mhz machine and want to know if it is worth the extra money to get one with 0 wait states. I have been told that even 1 wait state causes a large decrease in performance. I have also been told that with no wait states there is a decrease in performance, having to do with two devices trying to use the bus at the same time. I don't know who to believe. Could someone explain *exactly* what wait states are and how they impact both CPU and I/O performance? I will also purchase an 80287 for this machine and have been told that putting an 8 Mhz version in a 10 Mhz machine will cause it run at the 80287's pace. This seems hard to believe, but maybe it is related to wait states. Anyone care to comment?
