[comp.sys.ibm.pc] UNIX for PC/AT ?

randy@gtuplab.UUCP (09/17/87)

I'm looking for names, addresses, and comments on vendors
for a UNIX V to run on an IBM PC/AT compatible (80286). I'd
like to be able to run DOS as a process if at all possible.

What a coincidence....

I was just going to post the same inquiry except that I was going
to add that the UNIX machines at my location are connected up with
Sun's NFS ethernet and I would like to exploit this as well, if
	possible.
If any contributor could also E-mail any inputs to me I will
	post a summary.

The only flavor of UNIX for 286 currently shipping with a program
allowing DOS operation is V/AT, from MicroPort, with an extra-cost
package called DOSmerge/286 to run one DOS session. My experience with
this is that you should wait for a later release of this, since there
are some problems running serial ports in v2.2, and the three people I
know who have DOSmerge indicate that operation is still not production
quality. Other systems are being advertized, but I haven't seen a
production copy (as opposed to beta software you pay for) of anything
else.

If you need to run ethernet connections, Xenix supports Excelan packages
which allow telnet and ftp. NFS is not supported at this time, and there
are some problems with PC-NFS holding interrupts off for 2-3ms, causing
lost serial data, etc. The C compiler is not PCC, and the object format
is not COFF, but you can product DOS executables if you wish.

Vexix (from Venturcom) is a certified port of SysV, and also supports
Excelan packages. This is a realtime version, with kernel fixes allowing
realtime operation. It appears to be a proper superset of SysV, and
should run any SysV program. Programs from MicroPort V/AT should run on
Venix.

Hope some of this helps.

I agree, but the 1.3 release (Beta) is based on the V/AT version 2.3 kernel
which fixes the 9600 baud serial port problem, the clock problem, and many
others. Look for a "real" release in October.

Several things. The Exelan product is also avaliable from Microport for
use with their 2.2 and 2.3 kernels. NFS is in the works (from Exelan).

The C compiler from MicroSoft (Xenix) IS the MSC 4.0/5.0 compiler avaliable
for MSDOS. It supports ANSI C, is fast, and it can cross compile to DOS.
In fact, the "help" message produced with cc -help gives the SAME options
as the DOS version, complete with '/'s instead of '-'s :-)
The Xenix compiler blows the pants off the pcc from AT&T, I just wish it did
COFF :-)

None of the compilers up to thru 2.1.3 do that on my machine! They just
say "unknown option: help" and terminate. You must have either a newer
version or perhaps the IBM version. I would go to 2.2, but I can't run
TCP/IP on it yet, and need that more than the update.
