Hello -- I have a problem that I've never heard of. Last night I was cleaning up my hard disk, and I thought that I would unfragment the harddrive. So, I run chkdsk as usual, everything is okay. I then run the unfragment program, and it stops about about 1/8th of the way through, with some file error. I then abort the program, and run chkdsk. It says "Probable non-DOS disk, continue (y/n)". I continue, and there are a couple of cross-linked files, and some files get truncated. Re-run chkdsk, and get the ominous message again. Run a disk diagnostic program, and don't get any errors. There was no physical trauma to the hard drive during the time I was using the system. As far as I can tell, the drive is completely okay -- no data errors, all programs tested work just fine. One thing I did notice is that data access times may be slowed down a little, but that is just speculation. Other than re-formatting, does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do? All the other times I have seen the "probable non-DOS..." error, on other hard disks, there has been serious FAT problems, but yet MACE reports that both FATs are okay. If anyone has any ideas, including re-formatting, please drop me a line via e-mail. I will summarize to the net, as usual. Thanks. Chris. ======================================================================= Path: uwmcsd1!csd4.milw.wisc.edu!cmaag From: cmaag@csd4.milw.wisc.edu bitnet: cmaag%csd4.milw.wisc.edu@wiscvm.bitnet {seismo|nike|ucbvax|harvard|rutgers!ihnp4}!uwvax!uwmcsd1!uwmcsd4!cmaag =======================================================================
