Anyone out there playing with the "new" Apple Appletalk card for the PC. I have one and to put it mildly am UNIMPRESSED by the poor software -- I cannot find a spooler even for postscript that works the way normal print spoolers work. You're absolutely right about the Appletalk card that the Fruit Stand (Apple Co.) markets. The hardware itself is very nice -- nicely constructed, gold edge card plating, etc., but the software quite frankly sucks the proverbial Hairy Bird. It seems that the folks at Apple with all their hoopla about standardized interfaces could have bothered to read the nice documentation that IBM so carefully produced about How To Write A Device Driver. Hmph. The best fix I've seen to make a PC talk over Appletalk is TOPS. Their software is 1/3 as large as Apple's and is far superior in both reliability and operational simplicity. It costs serious $$$, though. -- David Boyes ARPA: 556%OREGON1.BITNET@WISCVM.WISC.EDU Systems Division BITNET: 556@OREGON1 University of Oregon Computing Center UUCP: dboyes@uoregon.UUCP

> Anyone out there playing with the "new" Apple Appletalk card for the PC. > I have one and to put it mildly am UNIMPRESSED by the poor software -- I don't know about the APPLE card but we just got in a card from TANGENT INC which was there APPLETALK PC CARD and to say the least we were IMPRESSED. We also got in there software which allows a PC to mount disks on an appleshare network and their printer support software which allows you to redirect lpt3: through lpt6:(?) to any device on an appletalk network. We have now ordered 6 sets of the above to allow us to network PC's with MACS. Their software is also supposed to run on the Apple card but we have not tested it as the apple cards are hard to get around here. The print software also works with lasershare running on a MAC. I believe tangent also have a spooler for the PC. Well rumour has it that the Apple card is made by Tangent technologies (confirmations please?) the makers of PC MacBridge. Now the old PC MacBridge was a stone compared to TOPS but I hear there is a new one released about now that is hot. Check it out before you decide.
