[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Adding 2nd ESDI drive to Compaq 386 system.

bradbury@oracle.UUCP (Robert Bradbury) (10/13/87)

I have a Compaq 386 system with the standard 130 Mb (Core) drive
and the standard Compaq (Western Digital?) ESDI controller in it.
I would like to add a 2nd high capacity drive to this system
and know that I can get a CDC WREN III with an ESDI interface.

Unfortunately Compaq does not sell the cables to do this even though
the ESDI controller seems to have a connector on it for a 2nd drive.

Can anyone tell me what cables I need to add a 2nd ESDI drive to the
Compaq and what vendor might supply them? I think I need a normal
cable and an additional daisy chain cable between the two drives
as well as a power cable.

Does anyone know how to get this kind of real technical information
out of Compaq? (The interface through the "authorized dealers" is
shall we say "poor".)

Email responses are fine unless someone would like to post an "everything
you wanted to know about ESDI, SCSI and ST506 interfacing" tutorial to
the net (I'm sure there are many of us interested in this type of thing).

Thanks in advance.
