Hello net-landers, I have a peice of software, but want to protect it against someone else running it without the proper 'key'. I plan to make the key a PROM, but can't figure out where to put it on an IBM PC/AT. I have a PC, XT, and an AT, and there are open slots next to the BIOS on the PC and XT, but none on the AT. I found the memory locations for the chips on my XT with no problems (F000:4000), but like I said, there are NO slots next to the BIOS on the AT (compatable). Is this because of my compatible? Are the sockets located somewhere else on the mother board that I haven't noticed? And, if there are NO sockets (like I suspect), is it illegal to change a byte on the IBM PC/AT BIOS's even if it's at a location that is NOT used? To do this, I would have to COPY the BIOS chips, would that be illegal even if I don't modify them? I have sent away for info about a little plug that you plug into your RS-232 port, but they haven't sent me anything yet. So, if anyone knows anything about these little 'plugs', I would appriciate any information which you could supply on them (i.e. How do they work? How do I access them? etc..). I know I have alot of questions, but any/all help would be MUCH appriciated. So that the net doesn't get cluttered up, please send me any/all responses via E-MAIL. If there is enough interest, I will summerize. Thank you in advance... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Luis Chanu "Live every day as if it were your last, UUCP: ihnp4!sun!aeras!grinch!luis because one day you will be right."
