[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Modem experiences sought ..

jwabik@shamash.UUCP (Jeff Wabik) (10/09/87)

Does anyone have experience with any of the following modems:

	Everex 2400, Avatex 2400, U.S. Robotics 2400, Microbotics 2400.

These seem to the be the cheapest in the market (I'm interested in Cheap.. 8^),
but I have serious reservations about them since similar Hayes technology
costs roughly 3 times more...

Thanks in advance ..

	-Jeff

I'm using the U. S. Robotics Courier 2400 (external) modem as the
primary dial in/out port here. It's been up and running for about
two months, and like it. No problems. No incompatibility with any
Hayes-dependent software. I've sold half-a-dozen of them to my best
customer, and they like it, too!

I am using an External Everex 2400 (called the 24e) on the HTCS BBS in
Honolulu (808)531-2659 and have had no problems installing the modem as
a US Robotics 2400.

I also am using an internal Everex 2400 in my own machine. It seems to
dial a little slower (with same settings in Procomm v2.4.2 as the Everex
1200 I used to have), and in one program, doesn't hang up the phone properly.
It is only a minor irritation as it is possible to "+++" and then "ATZ".

All in all, I have been happy with the Everex modems -- among other things
call progress and Data to Voice switches are easily handled on the Everex.

If price is a concern, I believe the Everex wins in this category. However,
if you qualify as a Sysop, you can get USR products for 1/2 price.
