[comp.sys.ibm.pc] UsiA PC Remoely

bose@iuvax.cs.indiana.edu (10/22/87)

I am looking for a good communications program that will allow
me to access my IBM PC remotely. I would like to dial up my PC
from another terminal and run DBase or Paradox.

Check into Carbon Copy from Meridian Technology. It will cost you about
$100 at each end, but it has worked just fine for me and the group I work
with. It can even be configured for automatic call-back operation.

Disclaimer: I don't sell it, I just use it. . . .

You may want to try 'close-up' from Norton-Lambert. It seems to be
able to run almost anything via modem on a pc. We sell it to all of
our business customers who are on support contracts. It makes life a
lot easier when we can remotely handle a users question, rather than
having to go to their site to take care of their difficulties.

If you would like some information on this, send me a note and I will
put something in the mail.

PC Magazine has recommended both "Remote" and "PC Anywhere". I have
used Anywhere and find it quite useful. The one thing Anywhere has
going is the ability to run any well behaved software from almost any
remote terminal.

I've used two packages that does exactly what you want. They are called
Carbon Copy and CloseUp. Both are very good at operating a PC remotely.
They use proprietary communication protocols, so you need to have two copies,
one at each end. They handle things like direct screen writes, graphic
pictures and the like. The only glitch I found is that Carbon Copy won't
recongize the ALT key - used as a hotkey for DesqView. Otherwise, they
work great. I've tried them with dBase III Plus, Lotus (All versions),
FramwWork II, WordPerfect 4.2 and dialing into a PC that is part of a local
area network (This allows me to dial into a LAN that doesn't have the dial-in
ability.) I have'nt tried them with Paradox, but I'm positive it will work.

Does anyone else have any experience with these programs??

I have some eperience with a package which doesn't require a copy of the
software at each end. PC-Anywhere will let any one of 32 different
terminal types dial in and run the PC. All the 32 entries can be modified
and one of them is a special piece of software that you can run on a PC.

I have no ties with this company except a satisfied user of PC-Anywhere.
