[net.music] "pan flute" music

hawk@eosp1.UUCP (Jim Hawkins) (04/18/84)

A few nights ago, Merv Griffen had a guest virtuoso of the "pan" flute
(I hope that's the right name for it) who was promoting a new album.
I have heard this music on easy listening stations and by the time it caught
my attention it was too late. Merv did not repeat the man's name nor
the name of the album when the guy left.

Does anyone have any info on the music, artists name or album name?

		Thanks,

PS: In case I got the name of the instrument wrong it is an ancient instrument
consisting of nothing more than one octave of pipes which are blown across
the top. The instrument is incredibly simple for the beautiful sound which
came from it.

I suspect that the person you saw on TV was Georghe Zamfir. He is a
Romainaian who is currently touring the US. The guy's speed and control is
just amazing. Although his recent "easy listening" stuff is a sell-out, his
original native folk music contains some of the best solos that I have
ever heard anywhere... the clarity, the coloring, the control while bending
notes is awe-inspiring. I once had a ethno-musicology teacher who
called him one of the world's greatest musicians. Unfortuately, he seems
to have stopped producing these folk albums and it is harder and harder
to find them. He now does covers to famous music soundtracks and things
like that. I was once in a train station in Paris and heard one of his
songs over the musak. He is much more popular in Europe than here.

Musical Heritage Society has an disc by Georghe Zamfir (syrinxist).
If anyone is interested, send mail and I will send their address. The
MHS disc is not pop; it is mostly ethnic stuff and very pleasant listening.

Warning to classical/romantic/ethnic musc freaks: Do NOT get involved with
MHS unless you either have a LOT of self--control or are looking to expand
your record collecton continuously.
