Does anyone with a Leading Edge Model D running MS-DOS 3.1, know how to
increase the environment size?
I have already tried the following without success:
. shell=c:\command.com /p /e:32 ...in the config.sys file
. looking to change the environment size by modifying location df3h, suggested
by someone a while ago. The location didn't have 0Ah as expected.
. Using MS C's SETENV utility. I got the message 'Unrecognizable COMMAND.COM'
or something like that. The disclaimer for SETENV says that it's only
guaranteed to work on PC-DOS 3.1.
I set up a number of environment variables in the autoexec.bat file. These
are for use with MS C, e.g. LIB=\cc\lib;\usr\lib INCLUDE=\cc\include;\usr\inc
etc, etc. During boot, when DOS is handling the autoexec.bat file, I get the
error "Out of environment space." After doing a SET command, usually the
last couple of characters in the last variable are missing. I come up with
about 128 characters on the screen. I can type in the variable with a set
command and everything is ok. As a matter of fact I can set tons of more
variables amounting to hundreds of characters, if I use the set command
interactively. If I put these commands in a batch file separate from
autoexec.bat and run it, I again get the "Out of environment space." What
gives?
I have tried to call LE product support. Basically, I got the run-around.
'What's an environment?', 'I'll have to ask the system expert', 'Give us your
number and we'll get back to you'. Needless to say, I haven't been called
back. And since they've changed their toll free number to a regular number,
I'm not willing hold for 20 minutes.
Do different vendors actually change MS-DOS to suit their needs? If they
do then they must have the source, right? So LE should be able to give me
a way to increase my environment right?
If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.
