[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Leading Edge Model M BIOS Update

dons@killer.UUCP (Don Simoneaux) (11/12/87)

I am a happy owner of a Leading Edge, Model M (made by Mitsubishi --
same as Sperry PC) who has been longing to upgrade to EGA or VGA display.
Until now the word from Leading Edge was that the Model M BIOS was not
compatible with other than CGA or MDA (I use an Everex Graphics Edge --
Hercules clone switchable to CGA).

When I called today to enquire again I was told that Mitsubishi has a
ROM BIOS replacement chip set (ver 4.71). There was an article about
this in the July 87 issue of PC Resource. The chip set is available from
Service Concepts International (1-800-227-3378). I called and talked to
a nice chap named Rob. He is getting some technical info from Mitsubishi,
so I plan to call him back. Cost for most Model M's will be $69.90 incl S&H,
but some older Model M's will require a $133.90 upgrade.

Is there anyone out there who has seen the PC Resource article or knows
any more about this? Does it really allow upgrade to EGA/VGA? What other
effects result from the BIOS change? Let me know if you want me to keep
you posted on what I find out.
