A nonprofit organization with which I am involved is trying to set up a computer system to do our newsletter and maintain our membership data base. We intend to get a cheap PC clone with a Hercules-emulating graphics display and a small hard disk, a combination available locally for well under $1000. What we need is software--a WYSIWYG word processor which can produce Postscript output which we can get printed commercially or on a member's Laserwriter. The important thing is to be able to edit right-justified copy on the screen, ideally in something spaced like the font we'll get on the laser printer. We don't need graphics, but we need multiple columns and a Times-Roman-like font. I'm thinking of trying Microsoft Word, which I can get cheaply through Harvard, but am interested in hearing of any other possible solutions. We can't afford more than $200. WordPerfect will give you multiple columns, and it handles Times-Roman spacing ok. It's not very adequate for proportional fonts, and its support of PostScript is virtually non-existent.
