[net.general] UCBVAX Crashed August 29, 1984 - UUCP Mail lost

fair@dual.UUCP (Erik E. Fair) (08/31/84)

At 22:30 on August 29, 1984, ucbvax crashed and made a mess of a number
of the filesystems, and in particular the /usr/spool/uucp/C. directory
was completely destroyed. In the D. directories there are some 500
pieces of UUCP Email and without the matching C. file, there is almost
no way of telling where the letter was bound for.

After 5 hours of hacking with awk, I was able to recreate C. files for
247 of the 500 jobs. I hope that I did it correctly. However, since
that was only half the traffic, I suggest that if you have mailed a
letter through ucbvax any time in the last two or three days, and you
have not heard back from your correspondent, that you resend the
letter.
