I posted the following request for suggestions for a PC Checkbook Program: Can anyone suggest a PC checkbook program? It would be used to keep track of the bills paid by a volunteer fire department. So it should be able to "code" bills being paid for summary reports later. If possible it could also be used to print the checks. It could be commercial or public domain software. The responses I received are listed below. I selected Andrew Tobias' Managing Your Money. Thanks to everyone who gave me their suggestions. Vern Bradner ihnp4!mhuxh!vxb -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Phil Grenfell <likewise!uunet!dalcsug!grenfell> If you have a copy of dbase 3 plus there is a checkbook program included as demo program. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: gatech!isis!aburt (Andrew Burt) I have an awk script that presumably would work if you picked up a PC version of awk (I believe MKS has one in their toolkit). It doesn't print checks, though since it's awk-ese it's pretty easy to modify. It keeps track of checks by category as well; I use it for myself with categories like 'utilities', 'insurance', 'food', etc. -- is that what you mean by "code"? It is PD; came over the net a few years ago. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: ihnp4!ihlpl!db21 Dave Beyerl This is in reply to your request for a checkbook program. In a catalog from SHAREWARE EXPRESS that I have is a program called PG-General Ledger. The description is as follows: General Ledger 1.3A -- This is a full-blown accounting system that is ideal for a small business or even to use as a full featured personal system. It has the controls necessary to make sure everything is kept in balance and a complete audit trail always exists. It will even print checks for you. The financial information generated can be saved in the DIF format. This allows you to share data with Louts 1-2-3 and other programs. You can select up to 500 different account categories. One transaction can be split among up to 15 different accounts. Many other features. Twenty-one pages of on-disk documentation. Additional support available from the author. Requires two disk drives or hard disk to run. I have not used this program so I don't know any more about it, I just happened to remember seeing the program and your request brought back that memory. Shareware Express is located at Shareware Express 31877 Del Obispo, Suite 102 P.O. Box 219 San Juan Capistrano, CA 92693-0219 I am sending a paper copy by company mail so you have more information on cost ($6.95/disk), minimum order and handling. Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Shareware Express or the program author in any way. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: allegra!tektronix!tessi!atelabs!cds Dave Shanks Andrew Tobias' Managing Your Money is a good personal finance program that includes check writing software. Each check written can be assigned allocated to one or several accounts. You can also allocate income to one or several accounts. The program has many options for generating reports from the checkbook data. It will also print the checks for you on your printer. Because this is a presonal finance program, it has many other features that may or may not be useful to a fire department. There is a section that maintains a calendar. Another section keeps a "rolodex file" for you. If you have a modem, the program can dial from the rolodex. Still another section can be used to maintain an inventory list. Finally, the program can be used to run a small business. To that end, it is capable of generating invoices and tracking accounts receivable and accounts payable. Version 4.0 of Managing Your Money just came out. Its list price is ~$200 but a local store (Egghead Software) is advertising it for ~$150. Check it out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: ihnp4!ames!tektronix.TEK.COM!reed!psu-cs!alexc (Alex M. CHAN.) I have the new software sampiler from IBM PS-2, there is a PC check-book program on it. If you would like to have a copy of it, please let me know VIA E-mail -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: tait@gec-mi-at.co.uk (Philip Tait) I use Home Accountant Plus by Continental Software. The (legit.) version I use was originally bundled with the Columbia MPC, so it had to be 'unprotected' and altered to remove some hardware dependencies. (Incidentally, this made it possible to compile it with QuickBasic - essential if you're impatient like me!) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: berger@clio.las.uiuc.edu Mike Berger You might also find CashTrac useful. It's available on various BBS's.
