[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Help ! IBM-AT cold boot system load error.....

sdesai@topaz.rutgers.edu (Sdesai) (12/23/87)

Hi !

Can anyone in the netland help me ?

We have a true blue IBM-AT (512k, 20 mb hard disk, 1-1.2 Mb floppy drive,
1-360k floppy drive, 6 Mhz cpu speed).

About 3 months ago we started having "ERROR READING DRIVE C:......" error
every now and then. I backed up the entire hard disk and reformatted it.
We still kept getting the same error in a very random pattern. A service
technician from the store we had bought the machine from came over and did
"low level hard disk formatting". We still kept getting the same error.

Finally we got the disk controller card changed last week.

Now every morning, when we start the computer we get "unable to load system"
( i think it was error #1701) error and when we hit F1 key to continue,
the computer loads BASIC. If we try to turn off the computer and retry,
it boots the DOS properly. I reformatted the hard disk again yesterday
and today morning I had the same problem when I started the computer.

Any idea what is going on here ? What can I do to fix this problem ?

Could a cold computer room (about 68 degrees) be the cause ?
I am using DOS 3.0.

Thanks in advance for your help.
