cp@rabbit.UUCP (Gary Perlman) (09/16/84)
I am using a friend's account to send this message because all mine were removed by Bell management. I am leaving Bell Labs to take a faculty position at the Wang Institute of Graduate Studies. The Wang Institute is not affiliated with Wang Labs but was founded by the same family who owns much of Wang Labs. The Institute is a non-profit school currently specializing in software engineering. I will be teaching and doing research in human factors in software development. My reasons for leaving are varied: some personal, some professional. The crux can be found in Chapter 13 of Pirsig's book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I hope to promote interaction among people doing interesting work on user interfaces and documentation environments. My own work, including software, will be in the public domain where I feel academic research belongs. Should you be interested in receiving updates on various projects, please contact me at the address below. As far as Bell Labs is concerned, I will be happy to help people with any transitions brought about by my leaving. Ironically, most people at Bell will have better access to my work done after leaving than while I was there. I wish my friends at Bell Labs the best in their work. My address after October 1 will be: Gary Perlman Wang Institute Tyng Road Tyngsboro, MA 01879 (617) 649-9731 uucp: {decvax|brunix|linus}!wivax!perlman
