From Ted Holden, HT Enterprises Softway, of San Francisco, 800 338-2852, has been advertising 800x600 super-ega boards for under $200 recently. Usually you end up sorry for sending in a check on something like this, but this one turned into one of life's pleasant surprises. The board is made by Sysgen of Milpitas Ca. and is first class all the way. It uses Genoa chips and apparently is functionally equivalent to the $500 Genoa super-ega; it comes with a well written manual and the Pro-Spectrum software suite including 800x600 drivers for Ventura, Autocad, GEM etc. (Media Cybernetics has 800x600 drivers for Halo and DrHalo which work with it). Of course, the 800x600 modes require a multi-sync type monitor. The 800x600 mode is the point at which the whole business of PC graphics ceases to look toy-ish; it resembles the 1024x1024 modes of serious equipment far more than it does CGA or EGA. By contrast, the 640x480 modes of VGA or other "enhanced" ega boards resemble ordinary EGA far more than they do the 800x600 mode. Ted Holden HT Enterprises .
