[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Borland vs Microsoft / latest chapter

bob@imsvax.UUCP (Bob Burch) (01/14/88)

For those who missed it, a recent issue of PC WEEK described a scene in which
on Dec 2, a Hare Krishna approached Philippe at an airport, asking donations
for one of the Krishnas' hot-meals programs; Kahn handed him a $100 bill
and said there nine more like it if the Krishnas would personally deliver a
message to Bill Gates at Microsoft: that Philippe Kahn had donated $1000 to
their hot-meals program for the benefit of members of his (Gates') legal
staff whom Kahn assumed would shortly need such assistance. That, in my
estimation, is the way the rich and powerful are SUPPOSED to behave in
this life. I can't think of anybody else off-hand whom I'd want to buy
a compiler from.

Maybe I'm just cynical, but this Kahn/Krishna thing seems like a
nice publicity stunt for Kahn. He can easily afford the $1000,
and it makes him look like a nice guy in the press. When I donate
to charity, I don't tell everybody about it. Furthermore, I'm
not going to buy a compiler from somebody just because he's a nice
guy.

Hrumph.

Disclaimer: I own a Borland product that I like a lot, and which
gets used every day at home.
