[net.music] Sales: PF and MJ

``Thriller'' probably outsold ``Dark Side'' after its first month of release --
I'm not sure where you got your information, but DSOM only went platinum in
1982 and has been more of a *steady* seller than a smash hit. The only area
in which Thriller does not surpass DSOM (sales-wise) is total number
of weeks on the Billboard Top 200 album chart -- about 11 years. It still
might be on there; I haven't checked lately.

Thriller is not the biggest selling album of all time (> 31 million copies),
just the biggest album of the rock era (and MJ's previous effort, Off the Wall,
didn't do so bad, either -- 8 million). I think the Soundtrack to South
Pacific is the biggest seller of all time with about 40 million.

"Thriller" is the biggest seller at > 31 million copies.

"Dark Side of the Moon" has had the longest consecutive run on the pop
album charts (over 11 years) and it is still on the charts.

It's highly unlikely that Michael Jackson's album will sell that
consistently for 11 years. The success of MJ can be compared to that
of the Bee Gees ... something that only happens once because the
conditions are right for it but has no bearing after a few years.

DSOM is still on the Billboard charts and will celebrate its 10th year there
next month! It broke the longevity record (set by Johnny Mathis' Greatest
Hits) a few months back. As I recall, it took a fairly long time to hit
the charts initially - maybe 3-4 months - but has been a steady seller ever
since.

I wasn't aware that Johnny Mathis had the longevity record. Just
out of curiosity, how did "Tapestry" stack up ( it was Still on the
Billbored charts in 1977 ?? )
