[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Miniscribe 3650 / Xebec 1255 to AT

sipples@husc2.UUCP (sipples) (01/18/88)

I'm attempting to connect a Miniscribe 3650 hard drive to an AT clone using
a Xebec 1255 16-bit controller (Phoenix BIOS 3.06, if relevant). I'll be
using Disk Manager for Miniscribe when it arrives (ordered separately).
First, some hardware questions. There are two jumpers on the 1255: W1
and W2. W1 is marked "1 2 3" and is jumpered between 1 and 2. W2 is marked
"NL L" and is jumpered for NL. Any changes here?
On the drive, there are jumpers marked DS0 through DS3 (I believe) and a
couple of JS jumpers (I believe). The (incredibly bad) documentation said
that I should move the jumper from DS0 to DS1 (which I did). What is the
correct configuration here? (The signal and data cables are straight-
through, as far as I can tell. No twisted or swapped lines.)
Also, what is the proper drive type for the 3650? Disk Manager should
set it accordingly, but I'm wondering if I'll have difficulty. And is the
3650 RLL-capable? (In other words, if I can't use it as an AT-type drive,
would a XT RLL controller work?) Finally, any thoughts/comments on the
above hardware combination would be most welcome. (Suggestions for inter-
leave -- 10MHz/1 wait state?)
     Thanks in advance.
