While shopping for an 80386 clone I noticed some Genoa SuperEGA video board clones. These board can display 800x600 (580) pixels on a multisync monitor. Unfortunately the limited documentation didn't indicate how to program the board, nor how compatible it was to standard EGA or VGA modes. If these higher resolution modes can only be used for AutoCad, Ventura, Windows, GEM and Lotus 123, the extra cost seems excessive. Can anyone provide more information on these higher resolution EGA boards? Thanks. Alex Woo woo@pioneer.arc.nasa.gov

Very high reolution EGA cards are becoming quite common. There is even a rumor of a 1024x768 resolution EGA clone card coming out soon. These boards take over the EGA-servicible interrupts from BIOS (like INT 10h) and perform the tasks of character drawing etc. using on board rom routines. The trick to turning on the very high resolution modes is to send a special video mode value to BIOS. Normal ibm displays use modes 0 thru 15 for the various mono or color character or graphics formats. The high reolution boards use values like 115 for the Everex 640x480 mode, or (i think) 121 for the Genoa 800x600 mode. One very interesting package that makes use of these high resolution modes is the CLARITY1 from MASER Research. It allows you to capture video images and display them in real color or mono (not dithered), at the high resolution of these boards. Info on the CLARITY1 can be had from SEFCO at(818)765-8882.
