[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PCWrite questions ???

sseago@fthood.UUCP (01/22/88)

Two weeks ago I borrowed a registered copy of PC-WRITE version
2.71 to see if the program is what I need. I have been testing
it on 2 different machines and have run into problems on both
of them. The registered owner of the copy doesn't use it much
so he isn't of any help to get the questions answered and since
I'm not a registered user, Quicksoft won't talk to me (the old
catch-22).

Before you lite the old flame-throwers, don't bother, I fully
intend to register if the program will work like it's supposed
to. As of yet, I'm not convinced.

Here are the parameters of the tests:

CASE 1: a new Tandy 1000SX, dual floppy, monochrome
Tandy 130A (tandy mode) for printer A
		Tandy 210 for printer B
		DOS 3.2 from R/S

CASE 2: a Zenith 248 (286 machine), 20M and single floppy, EGA
		ALPS P2000G (Epson FX100 mode)
DOS 3.3 from Microsoft (not Zenith)

PROBLEMS similar on both cases:

ruler is not fully functional. The F2,F5 recall of the default
ruler does absolutely nothing. The F2,grey+/- does not
scan through the other rulers in pr.def (I did use
ALTgrey+/- on the Tandy), the + key beeps and the - key
	does nothing.

When testing, I opened a document, F2, modified the
ruler margins, F3 (the R/S asked to append the
pr.def file, the Zenith asked to append the
ed.def file, although I appended the new rulers
to both files on both systems during the testing)
appended the files, F2, F2, modified the ruler again,
		F2, entered text under the new/unsaved ruler, F2, F5
expecting the default ruler to appear but nothing
happened. then I press the plus and minus keys and
the plus beeped and the minus did nothing.

When I looked at the pr.def and ed.def files, the
created default rulers were appended to the file.

When I open a new document, the created default ruler
		does come up.

So what is wrong with the F5,+,- keys ???? Do I need some
other configuration to make them work???

PROBLEM peculiar to the R/S in case 1:

(I am using the ed.trs and not the standard ed.def)
When I go to print to either printer A or B (this is
with the correct pr.def files for each printer
and printing from 'A>pr filename' or from inside
ed where it calls pr.exe), after it opens the file
but before the F10 to tell it printer is ready,
I get the error message that <ALT>G.S:6 spacing
doesn't exist, line skipped. Then when it prints
out, it issues only a <cr> and not a <lf>.

An inspection of the two pr.def files shows that
the .S:6 parameter is listed. The printer dip
switches are set for 1/6 inch.

PROBLEM peculiar to the Zenith in case 2:

After typing in the 'ed filename', it clears the screen
and the gives the error 'Number expected, Control
		file "ed.def" line 1 col 4; Esc:cancel, F9:continue.

I press F9 and go on with processing like nothing
happened. I have checked the ed.def file and every
thing looks fine with a ruler on the first line.
The ed.def file has never been modified since the
original copy made from the registered copy. This
problem doesn't show up when the same files are run
		on the R/S.

So there are my three problems. To any of you folks that are
avid fans of PCWrite, please come to it's rescue or I'm
off to find a word processor/editor that works right.

Thanks for the help....
